Artist statement for Ewingsdale Ceramics Market: Sept 2024.
There is some irony in the thrill I experience using my own unique handmade ware.
My intention to break all the rules disseminated by the outdated dominant academic paradigm drives my practice.
I am asked ‘what are these (bowls) used for?’
The question leaves me perplexed and astounded at how disconnected humans have come from their ancient roots.
The bowl exists as possibly one of the earliest conceptual domestic objects in the human psych.
Giving, receiving, holding and carrying underpin the form of the bowl, long before ceramics became a thing.
In the hierarchy of archetypes in ceramics ‘the bowl’ is the primary form. In alchemy the bowl supports all transactions. For the displaced souls separated from ceremony through the tyranny of colonisation it is the vessel of creation for new age ritual.
