Let’s Clay With Fire II: The Secret Log Kiln (2015)

Returning to ceramics full-time after winding down 18 years of printmaking and 2D digital montage projects under the Ten Four Journeyman Artist banner, I sought a radical reboot to basics. Starting again from ground zero intuitive practice and shelving a lifetime quest to embrace cutting edge technology in the visual art techniques. My new quest, inspired by Nassim Harramein’s particle physics theories, was to investigate the physics of entanglement and consciousness. How an artist is capable of imbuing cognitive and emotional memory into a work of art.

My Yellow Spectral Sun project had explored the concept of “the end of time,” built around the 8-year astronomical window surrounding the 2012 Mayan calendar transition. It seemed clear that ancient indigenous cultures may hold the key to the emerging paradigm shift in global thinking alluded to by the ancient Mayans, The Ecological and Systems Philosophers like Fritjof Capra and Arne Naess (Founder of Deep Ecology.)

The holographic physics of Nassim Haramein was showing that, through quantum physics, what had been designated as mysticism, was in fact reality through the new/ancient lens of Unified Physics.

Seeking an immediate, tactile way to ground these massive universal frameworks, I returned to the studio with a deliberate “back to basics” methodology. 

The Secret Log Kiln (2015) was my physical baseline to fire my initial hand built sculptures and vessels . Based on simple observations of how bushfires channel heat, I placed two parallel logs together to create a rudimentary fire path, capping it with corrugated iron sheets.

The kiln operated at a highly primitive level, with temperatures reaching only 600°C to 750°C. This low-temperature firing held the clay right at the threshold of transformation—the precise boundary where soft earth chemically binds into ceramic stone without reaching full vitrification.

A special equinox firing was organised with a handful of interested guests invited. Temperature was reached well into the evening, giving the kiln that magic fire sculpture aura that only ceramists know.
